Green Screen Printing for a Safer and Greener Earth

By: Allan Chua

"We all want to wake up each morning to a beautiful sunrise and be thankful for the wonderful sceneries that nature has endowed us. We run along to a busy day ahead of us, and more often than not, no matter how much we want to just sit back and enjoy the beauty, our jobs and priorities keep us from doing so. Most people try to save up or spend a large percentage of their hard-earned savings for a vacation or two in order to enjoy nature, but they usually ignore the minute details of their lifestyle choices that affect our fragile ecosystems. A large number of people spend for commodities ignorant of the fact that these items might be the contributing factors to the pollution of our environment. If we stop for a minute and speculate, how can we really be thankful to nature for the unaccountable benefits we enjoy from her if we continually harm the planet?

There are a few important facts people nowadays must know if they want to live in harmony with nature. These may be hard to accept but they must be brought to light in order that many may recognize the hazards of using non-natural and nonbiodegradable products such as conventional cotton. Conventional cotton uses approximately a quarter of the world’s insecticides and more than 10 percent of the pesticides. These pesticides are suspected of causing so many diseases because of its carcinogens. That is why environmentally conscious individuals as well as companies are opting for the safer organic cotton, which is grown naturally through organic farming. Organic cotton is being used for sustainable t-shirts and other eco-friendly apparels. Organic cotton farming is meant for putting into practice environmentally safe methods and making business owners become more socially responsible. Aside from organic cotton, hemp and bamboo are also becoming more popular as a good source of sustainable fibers used for the production of eco-friendly t-shirts.

Another concern is that the use of standard printing inks used in screen printing pollutes the environment each year with more than a million gallons of plastisols each year. Plastisol inks are made from liquefied polyvinyl chloride and are known to be the most environmentally harmful plastic around. These chemicals come from lethal chlorine gas and non-renewable fossil fuels. It leaves a very negative environmental footprint that most textile manufacturers only use it sparingly and only when necessary. Studies revealed that those working on or living near polyvinyl chloride plant facilities face a life-long risk of ailments caused by these cancer-causing chemicals. Several of the health risks stated were brain cancer, leukemia, lung cancer, and liver cirrhosis.

A better alternative would be water-based inks that contain neither phthalates nor polyvinyl chloride. Water-based inks are used for green screen printing methods because they do not contain heavy metals, are non-toxic, and lead-free. They also do not contain ozone-depleting substances and are easily washed out using water instead of the usual harmful solvents that plastisols use. Water-based inks are preferred by printers using the green screen printing methods because of durability, inexpensiveness, and efficiency."
